The Swimming Pool in the Lake
For an innovative take on the standard swimming pool, look no further than the gorgeous floating pool at Villa d'Este, Lake Como. This isn't your typical method of beating the heat, guests can experience the unusual sensation of relaxing in water above water while gazing at the dramatic mountains of this northern Italian holiday spot.
Surrounded by 25 acres of magnificent garden, Villa d'Este was originally built in 1568 as the summer residence for Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio. Since its inception, Villa d'Este has been the playground of an Empress, an English Queen and aristocrats, and in 1873 was transformed into the luxury hotel it is today.
In addition to the floating pool (which also features a Jacuzzi) there is an indoor pool and a kid's pool. Eight tennis courts, a squash court, sauna and steam bath, jogging track, windsurfing, sailing, canoeing and water skiing round out the activities at Villa d'Este
Several 18-hole golf courses are within a short drive of the property, among them the Villa d'Este Golf Club. The award-winning Beauty Center offers a large selection of massages, hydrotherapy and beauty treatments for face and body.
There are several bars and restaurants on the property as well, and the 152 guest rooms are located both in the Cardinal Building and in the Queen's Pavilion, built in 1856 in honor of the Princess Caroline of Brunswick. The floating pool is open every day during the summer. Be sure to take your camera. Floating on air means nothing can spoil your view.
