Posada de Mike Rapu
Let's face it, you don't really need an excuse to visit Easter Island. It's just one of those places you shouldn't leave this earth without seeing. Last December, though, an extra incentive was added, in the form of the newly-built, luxury eco-hotel Posada de Mike Rapu. No, it's not the most romantic name but, with views like these out of your bedroom window, who's nitpicking? Until its arrival, the lodging options on the world-famous island had been pretty limited.
Located on the southern side of the tiny island, five miles from the island's only town, the Posada boasts views of the Pacific Ocean in one direction and the Rano Raraku volcano in the other. The 30-room hotel is constructed from indigenous materials like rauli wood and pizarra stone, and features many environmental design features. These include natural lighting through its many windows, thermal retention, low-flow water fixtures, high-efficiency lighting, and water-efficient landscaping.
While you're there you can take advantage of the hotel's services to get thoroughly immersed in the island. They offer guided walks, exploring the island's natural wonders and the enigmatic moai dotted along the island's coastline. Alternatively, there are scuba tours into volcanic caverns and coral reefs. One to add to your wish list. RM
