Park Hotel

Since everybody is talking about “prefab” these days, we thought you might be interested in this “prefab hotel.” It’s quite different from Verana, but we like the idea of instant hotel rooms — efficient and to the point.

Dasparkhotel is, essentially, three concrete pipe sections sitting on the grass in a park in the Austrian city of Ottensheim within easy reach of the Danube. Visitors receive a code to unlock the door to their pipe, and inside they find a double bed (with storage space underneath), a light, a single electrical outlet, and a small window. The thick cement keeps the interior comfortable and eliminates noise from outside, creating a secure-feeling environment. A bar, cafeteria, swimming pool, and restroom facilities are nearby.

For the future, designer Andreas Strauss is considering making these easy-to-build, easy-to-dismantle structures with solar panels and cell-phone-operated doors. He foresees creating groups of the structures as temporary housing outside art festivals and concerts.

Yeah, sounds absolutely excellent but where is it if I wanted to visit?

It would totally require a TV or music system inside for me to be interested. Also, restrooms are ‘nearby’? How ‘nearby’? I dont know if I like the idea of traipsing across a public park at midnight to pee, or at 9AM with a bathrobe and towel to shower.

This isn’t too original. They’ve been doing this in Arizona since 1972 at a place called Arcosanti Camp. It’s a nice twist on an old idea, but hardly as original as one would think. And Arcosanti has approximately 20 structures.

What a great idea! It’s about time someone was thinking outside the box. Very Clever indeed.

Any comments?
