Over the waves

There's something so appealing about living over the water, being lulled to sleep as the currents sway underneath you. If only for a night or two… The Palafitte Hotel sits (literally) on the edge of Lake Neuchâtel, in Monruz, Switzerland, and it's striking not only in location but also in design.

Designed by architect Kurt Hofmann, it's a row of suites clustered along the edge of the lake, on stilts. Each has a private terrace, lake view and even an office nook – which makes it sound like you really could live (and work) there.

Neuchâtel also offers an intriguing list of attractions: a watch museum, devoted to the history of time (it boasts over 2,700 watches and 700 clocks); the Laténium, a hi-tech archaeological park; and a vine and wine museum.

Not that you need lots of tourist attractions to make a stay at the Palafitte worthwhile. The view alone would be worth it. RM
