Old meets new in Beijing

There's a lot of stunning architecture being created in China right now, so it's refreshing to find the Hotel Côté Cour – a traditional courtyard building tucked away in the protected Hutong area of the city. It has been updated to reflect the best of contemporary design, but without losing its local character.

The Hutong district served as the traditional home for dancers and musicians of the Imperial Court, and the hotel certainly reflects the creativity you might expect with such a heritage.
It's also tiny – with only 14 guest rooms and suites surrounding a central garden and lily pond. It's a world away from the city's many megahotels and has been described by visitors as 'an oasis from the chaos'.

Apparently the Hotel Côté Cour is at the forefront of a new trend for courtyard hotels in Beijing. If so, that can only be a good thing. RM
