Nick's Cove

If you need another reason to drive California's Highway One, here's a good one. Nick's Cove. This restored getaway on Tomales Bay in Marin County is a rustic seaside retreat – a chance, say creators Pat Kuleto and Mark Franz, to be in nature and celebrate life. The settlement of buildings on land and pilings over the beach dates back to the 1930s. It was in business as a restaurant and rental cottages for over 70 years – and now it's back in business again.

Nick's CoveBoulevard and Jardinière, and Franz, the executive chef who worked with Kuleto in creating the eaterie Farallon, are both Marin locals and keen fishermen – and had been dreaming for almost a decade of creating a retreat on Tomales Bay.
