In the dunes

2844 In the dunes

A village of star-shaped white linen tents in the middle of the Tunisian Sahara. Scattered beneath the palm trees around a shimmering free-form pool cut from the desert sand. This mirage is the Pansea Ksar Ghilane, in the palm plantation of Kar-Ghilanes oasis. And I want to go there right now.

Located southeast of Zaafrane, in southern Tunisia, the Ksar is accessible only by jeep from Djerba (three hours away) or Douz and Tozeur (four hours away). It's not easy to get to, but when you get there, the majesty of the dunes is said to sweep you away.

You'll stay in one of 60 Bedouin-style tents, furnished with Mergoum carpets, private bathrooms, air conditioning, double beds with unbleached cotton sheets, and wrought-iron furniture.

As if that weren't exotic enough, the hotel restaurant serves exotic briks, sizzling brochettes, zesty mloukhia and home pressed olive oil which you can eat inside or out. Presumably there's somewhere to park your camel too. RM

The tents are beautiful, but once swept away by the dunes, what else is there to do?
