Hotel San Domenico
Taormina. The Sicilian town is practically poured down the side of Monte Tauro into two breathtaking bays, all within the shade of volcanic Mount Etna. Picturesque? Scarily so. And perched high on the hillside is the Hotel San Domenico, a 14th-century monastery that's now a legendary retreat, having played host to famous names like Wagner, de Maupassant, Churchill and Mitterand.
