Hasta Mañana

The art of Mañana.......................(elcosmico9.jpg)

‘Mañana cannot generally be found in cities with more than one stoplight,’ so says the Mañanifesto for a new breed of lodging in Marfa, Texas. ‘Mañana doesn’t care about email or normal hours of operation. Mañana recognizes that we can’t all have everything we want at any given moment… Mañana is the anticipation that it might happen today, and it might just as likely not, and really either way it’s not that big of a deal.’ Meet El Cosmico. Or the idea of it. Like mañana, it’s not quite ready yet.

Mañana, apparently, is an ‘exodus from a world of urgency’, and that’s what El Cosmico promises. It’s not an escape from reality and progress, it’s a chance to put stuff on hold. A vacation. Now you’re talking…

So what exactly is El Cosmico? The cool, laidback baby of Liz Lambert and her management company Bunkhouse (Hotel San Jose and Jo’s Hot Coffee in Austin), El Cosmico is being built (by dirt wizards) on 15 acres of land in Marfa, Texas. A combination of yurts, hammocks, airstreams and earthhouses.

A creative and sustainable bedouin-style community, it will feature 30 renovated vintage trailers arranged around a central pool and pavilion.

In addition, El Cosmico will house a silk screen workshop, a pottery studio, and a darkroom, for both guests and locals. Sounds idyllic. I’m in.

El Cosmico will be found off Highway 67, just outside of the main center of Marfa. And when does it open? You know the answer… Mañana, of course. RM
