Far Far Away Land

Getting away from it all. If you really mean it, you’ll have to work hard to get there. But some places are worth the effort. Perched in the Himalayas, on a plateau, 7,000 feet above sea level, is 360° Leti. To get there, take an overnight train or a charter flight from Delhi, then drive for seven hours on hairpin bends through the mountains, before disembarking for a one-and-a-half-hour trek along a narrow trail along a cliff’s edge.

When you arrive at 360° Leti in Uttaranchal, you’ll find four traditional cottages with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. It’s a location that encourages you to slow down, a space that begs you to ‘just be’.

That’s the philosophy of parent company Shakti, who created the ‘camp’ as an experience for travelers who’re used to luxury but crave something more ‘authentic’. A well-appointed hotel that makes a minimal impact on its environment, but shows it off to best advantage. Luxury without excess, an interesting concept.

At 360° Leti, there’s no TV, no Internet, no cell phone access, no newspaper. Power is solar, water is from the mountains, heat is from stoves, beds are warmed by hot water bottles, light is from candles. Ambient noise? Forget it. Those are passing goats, or perhaps it’s chanting from the nearby temple.

By day, hike to a nearby waterfall and dive in. By night, gather around the lodge fireplace for dinner and fine wine, by candlelight. The hotel is open from October to May, and 3-night/4-day packages start from $1825 per person, including all meals, activities, a guide, porters, and transfers.

A small price to pay for perfect seclusion. RM
