Far, Far Away
There are quick getaways, and there are journeys, departures from the everyday, journeys of real discovery, life-changing, mind-altering adventures. Sometimes the only way to find something utterly new, utterly different, is to travel really far from home. The Remota in Patagonia, Chile, is just about as far from home as anyone could travel (unless you happen to live in Puerto Natales), ‘a hotel, so, so far away, hard enough to reach that you have to deserve it.’
It’s a description familiar to our sensibilities here at Been-Seen, the journey itself making the destination all the richer. The Remota is far from the city, immersed in untouched nature, but you won’t have to pitch a tent. The hotel provides all the essential luxury that you’ll need.
Designed by Chilean architects Germán del Sol (also responsible for the Explora in Atacama San Pedro), it’s a surreal block of jagged lightning bolts thrown down against a rugged coastline.
The 72-room hotel lies on a sea channel that eventually leads into the Pacific Ocean. Materials were brought there by boat, and it’s an idea conceived by the owners, a family of recreational sailors.
The main building is V-shaped, the roof is tiled with the grass that was once under the building.
Interiors are a combination of minimalism and utilitarian. Furniture is made from locally harvested Lenga wood, and the flooring is native slate.
Oh, and there’s a spa too. I think we all deserve this. RM
