Come to Mama

Travel + Leisure recently voted it the best design hotel in the world. Wallpaper and Fortune Magazine followed suit with Best Business Hotel 2009. It's called Mama Shelter. It's in Paris. So what's the big deal?

For one, it's not expensive, well not super-expensive anyway. For Paris. Secondly, it's designed by Philippe Starck, complete with Chewbacca and Superman masks as bedside light covers.

Thirdly, it was founded by the Trigano family (who also co-founded Club Med) and a French philosopher called Cyril Aouizerate. Club Med meets French philosophy? Commercial-mindedness meets cool sophistication? Intriguing…

Maybe it was Aouizerate's idea to cover the walls in words. They're everywhere – on corridors, on carpets, on ceilings…

Why 'Mama Shelter'? The 172-room hotel was designed as a place of refuge, the key to the city. Everyone's mama – somewhere safe and secure. A shelter for everyone. With silly masks.

Located in Saint Blaise, it offers, they say, 'rebel character and city life at a country pace.' The best of both worlds, as the many accolades suggest. RM
