Castle Leslie

Castle Leslie...........................(3876.jpg)

In a word: enchanting. How else would you describe a castle as old as the green hills that surround it, nestled in the Irish countryside? An estate where you can be both enveloped by a rich cultural history as well as stimulated by modern spa therapies? In two words: Castle Leslie.

Castle Leslie...........................(3875.jpg)

This is the Castle Leslie Estate, one of only 30 great Irish castle estates still run by the family that originally owned it. Since the 1660s, the Leslie family have lived on the estate, which covers no less than 1,000 acres of Irish countryside.

In the 300 plus years it has been in operation, Castle Leslie has welcomed everyone from politicians to poets, ambassadors to rock stars. Paul McCartney was married here in June 2002, and Winston Churchill was a first cousin of the Leslies.

And now you can live here too. For a while at least. The castle has a range of luxury accommodation including the charming Hunting Lodge, the self-catering Village Cottages and the newly renovated Old Stable Mews. Or you could always stay in the castle itself, which boasts 20 unique bedrooms as well as full special event facilities (on a side note: you can actually live here too, check out Castle Leslie Properties).

Speaking of special events, Castle Leslie has an unusually playful approach to its yearly celebrations that provide a nice contrast to the estate's sophisticated roots. They are Irish, after all. “The Castle's Got its Balls Back…” proclaims the ad for the Castle's “spooktacular” House of Horrors Halloween Ball. The more traditional guest might want to check out the Castle's annual Christmas at The Club or the New Years Eve Glitz & Glamour Ball.

And did I mention the spa? Castle Leslie's Victorian Organic Spa offers it all, from traditional massage and facials to treatments using ingredients found only on the Estate, such as the Victorian Woodland Wild Garlic Facial. Spa manager Sinead Owens says, “In early summer, the Leslie Estate woodlands are thickly carpeted with wild garlic. We mix the garlic with organic products made from fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables to make this rejuvenating facial.”

If repelling vampires isn't your thing, you could try Bryce's Walled Garden Pear and Green Apple Wrap instead, a treatment which Sinead says “has been cultivated from the most delicious pears and apples on the Castle Leslie Estate.” Apparently, ‘Bryce' was head gardener at the height of the Walled Garden years, and like much of what the modern visitor will experience at this Irish sanctuary, his work is forever intertwined with the Castle Leslie Estate.

As I said, simply enchanting. EG
