At Brassiere Beach hotel, all you have to do is sit and watch the sea. Not an easy thing to do if you're used to the overachieving lifestyle we have in the West. In Thailand, apparently, the locals hate frowns and expressions of anger. So leave those at home and put your feet up.
The curiously-named Brassiere Beach gained its moniker from an ancient Thai legend. Many years ago, there was a beautiful fisherman's daughter who had been promised to two suitors. When both came to claim her on the same day, her father, feeling rather lost for options, in an unSolomonly gesture, tore her into pieces and cast her body parts out to sea. Her breasts fell into the water by Brassiere Beach.
Nearby villagers, out of pity for the poor girl, built a spirit house where people came to give her brassieres. (Yes, really.) Today, fisherman still believe that giving her bras bring them good luck. That's why you'll find a lot of female undergarments littered around the locality. And hence the name of the hotel.
Curious legend aside, it's a pretty beautiful place. Located on Cosy Beach near Pranburi in Prachuabkhirikhan, it's a collection of nine artsy Mediterranean-style cottages, decorated in blues and whites, and sprinkled with colorful mosaic reliefs.
Each is different and totally private. Since it's so small, you won't find more than 20 people there at any given time. The perfect chance to get away, watch the sea and work on those frown lines. M
