Berlin Bolthole

It may be a budget hotel, but Berlin’s newest crash pad is all about design. Like many hotels of its kind, it was created to be the kind of place its owners themselves would like to stay in. The group of thirty-something friends who created the Michelberger Hotel wanted a ‘place that’s individual, charismatic, stylish, fun, rebellious and inexpensive, a place where anything goes, just like Berlin itself.’

The hotel, which takes its name from its founder, 31-year-old Tom Michelberger, is located in an old factory building near the city’s famous Oberbaum Bridge and River Spree.

In a city where hotels are apparently pretty staid or stodgy, it’s being hailed as a breath of fresh air – and targets a young, artsy clientele.

The Michelberger has 119 rooms, with high ceilings, loft-style decor, and cool features like bunks on top of bathrooms and flat-screen TVs built into wall-mounted boxes made of reclaimed wood.

The interior design is by Werner Aisslinger (creator of the LoftCube Studio, also in Berlin), and is a combination of hand-built wooden furniture, flea market finds, bold colors and bold patterned wallpaper.

Prices start at around $75. RM
