Among the volcanoes
The Losari Coffee Plantation Resort in Central Java is exactly what you'd expect it to be – a boutique hotel set in a coffee plantation. However it's a lot more than that. Located 900m above the plains of Central Java, way up in the highlands of Magelang, it's set in sweeping forests, encircled by eight volcanoes (Mounts Telomoyo, Andong, Merapi, Ungaran, Sumbing, Sindoro, Merbabu and Perahu).
During Dutch colonial times, the hotel was an active coffee plantation. Then it was abandoned and left to its own devices. It has since become a heritage site, and is now an eco resort that blends colonial (an 1828 Dutch Mansion) with Javanese (one/two-bed luxury villas) and contemporary architecture.
All villas and public spaces are tucked away in the lush vegetation, to give the impression of solitude and being in a bygone era. Guests have private gardens and pools and access to the hamams and spa.
Tea is served every afternoon in the mansion house. Javanese cookery, dance and music classes are available. And fresh Losari coffee, of course. RM
