Ace Hotel

When someone says they've created a cool hotel for creative people who aren't 'awash with cash', we pay attention. Especially if that hotel is in Portland, Oregon – the place, we're told, Angelenos flee to when they've had it with the freeways. The hotel in question is one of two new Ace Hotels (the other is in Seattle), created by three friends, Alex Calderwood, Wade Weigel and Doug Herrick.

Pearl District. Many original details of the building (previously the Clyde Hotel) have been preserved, so you'll find cast-iron roll-top baths, polished wood paneling, mosaic-tiled flooring, large windows and high ceilings with mouldings. These have been supplemented with architectural salvage and local artistry, to create a vibe that is, they say, 'elegantly disheveled yet uncluttered, comfortable and bohemian'. More home than hotel.
