A sky full of trailers

It’s hard to know, at first glance, what this Airstream trailer is doing, suspended in mid-air. But if you visit the Grand Daddy hotel in Cape Town, all will become clear…

For those of you who have never seen a trailer park on top of a multi-storey building, here’s a chance to.

Seven vintage trailers were lifted by crane onto the roof of the Grand Daddy, which was a bit like taking the American Dream and transplanting it to Africa and setting it against the backdrop of Table Mountain.

The trailers are now the hotel’s penthouse suites, albeit extremely alternative ones. Cape Town design studio Whatiftheworld asked local artists to decorate each with a unique design, and the results are wildly unexpected.

Guests can stay in the blue-and-white polka dot interior of Dorothy (above), the Afro-Funk (below), as well as Goldilocks and John-and-Yoko-themed suites.

Contrary to more traditional camp sites, each Airstream has air-conditioning and proper toilets and showers. However, just to show they have a sense of humor the folks at Grand Daddy have given each a tiny garden, complete with US Postal Service mailboxes.

Should you get bored of staring at the psychedelic interiors, there’s plenty more to do on those rooftops: outdoor movies at the hotel’s Pink Flamingo Cinema, and a rooftop bar. We’ve heard of Airstream vacation rentals before, but this takes some beating. RM

I stayed in the Pleasantville trailer back in January for one night while in Capetown. Very fun place and I met some interesting people.
