A Castle in the Sky
It's not often you get the chance to stay in a castle – especially one that looks like this. So next time you're in the vicinity of the Rhine, check yourself into Schönburg Castle. It's very Chitty Chitty Bang Bang…
Situated above the Medieval town of Oberwesel, Schönburg Castle is in the middle of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The castle has been around since at 911 AD, though not in this exact form. And certainly not as a hotel.
In fact it was burned down in 1689 by French soldiers, and lay in ruins for about 200 years, until a Mr Rhinelander from the US bought it and restored in in 1914. It was sold back to the town council of Oberwesel in 1950, and leased to the Hüttl family shortly after.
It was the Hüttls who established the hotel and restaurant – which boasts two single rooms, 18 doubles and two suites, furnished with four-poster beds and balconies overlooking the Rhine river, and two restaurant terraces with breathtaking views. If it was up to me, I'd book the Tower Suite, which has this dramatic little balcony (above). Old world done right. RM
