On a trip to Beijing two years ago, teenager Ben Gulak noticed the relationship between the city's lack of sunshine, crowded streets and motor vehicles. When he got back home, he set about designing something smaller and cleaner than a regular motorbike – a unicycle, but with a difference. The UnoCycle

The Uno is electric, so pollution-free. It has two wheels, but they're side by side, so it's easier to weave through crowded streets. When you want to turn, one wheel lifts slightly.

It's clever, but (yes… again…) it's only a prototype. Ben, now 19 and enrolled at MIT, is developing Uno with the help of a robotics engineer called Trevor Blackwell. When it's ready (theoretically in two years), it will be able to reach speeds of 40mph. Not exactly racey, but cleaner, and certainly faster than a bicycle. RM
