The 'silver bullet' Airstream trailer has become an American icon — and even the height of Hollywood cool (maverick actor Matthew McConaughey lives in one after all). But these days the 75-year-old company is branching out into something entirely different, with the help of Ford. The Ford Airstream Concept is a hybrid of trailer and car, with incredibly cool gizmos and green technology.
Launched in January but (sadly) not yet available for sale, the Airstream is a shiny, rivetted vehicle with a clamshell side door, a 360-degree screen in the passenger area (with groovy built-in lava lamp settings), a red-carpet interior and clever storage units.
In addition to all the bells and whistles, it's powered by a new plug-in hydrogen hybrid fuel cell ('HySeries Drive') that operates under electric power at all times and, it is claimed, gets up to 41 miles per gallon.
Ford and Airstream designed it to answer the call of the open road, celebrate the American road trip, and capture the spirit of optimism usually found in spacecraft. All we can say is, 'Scooby-Doo, where are you?'
