HumanCar

Let's face it. Driving your car to the gym is weird. Parking as close as you can to the gym door is weird. Running on a treadmill is weird. We need to get out more. Bicycles are great, but antisocial. Tandem bicycles, well, they just have an image problem. Could the HumanCar be the answer?

Father and son Charley and Chuck Greenwood hope so. They created the HumanCar Imagine_PS, a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle, as a viable alternative to fuel guzzlers. What's it powered by? Humans. Rowing. One, two, three or four of them at a time.

And for uphill stretches, it has electric assist motors and regenerative brakes to channel the vehicle's momentum back into its batteries. Kind of like a gas-electric hybrid, but without the gas.

And it makes sense. As a nation, America is getting heftier and more dependent on gasoline. Row to work and you eliminate both problems.

Though it has been compared with the car the Flintstones used to drive, we believe the Imagine may be a step forward rather than back to the Stone Age. It will be available soon for around $15,500. RM
