Still more underwater hotels

The competition is heating up in the world of upscale underwater hotels. First we heard about the Poseidon Undersea Resort in Fiji, then it was the Shanghai Shimao Wonderland submerged in a Chinese quarry, and of course everyone's heard about Hydropolis (pictured), the half-billion-dollar jellyfish-shaped mega-resort currently being built off the coast of Dubai. Now there's news of more…

Apparently Istanbul is planning to turn the submerged ruins of a 1930s tobacco factory in the Bosphorus Strait into a seven-storey hotel by 2010. And there's a floating hotel planned for the Great Barrier Reef, called, appropriately, Reefworld. Designed by Richard Hywel Evans (also responsible for the Huvafen Fushi underwater spa in the Maldives), it's promising an underwater spa, submerged bedrooms and glass-walled bathrooms. There's not much more information about either yet – but we're keeping our tentacles out…

Poseidon may be the first to open its doors (actually it's a tunnel). It's taking reservations for its $15,000-per-night rooms starting in September. And the parent company plans to open more resorts worldwide. Hydropolis and the Shimao should follow in 2009, and Istanbul and Reefworld the year after. All very cool, but Hydropolis is the only resort to boast a missile defense system to guard its 220 rooms and shopping mall against unfriendly attacks. It all sounds very James Bond. RM

    I am very excited to experience the Poseidon Resort in Fiji! This is such a great concept – to be living underwater – how cool is that?!
