Go fly a kite…
It's the time of year when, if the wind is right and there aren't too many trees around, kites take flight. On August 18, the skies over Long Beach in Washington state turn into a rainbow of swirling and fluttering color for the Washington State International Kite Festival.
The festival lasts a week and, during that time, visitors can watch kite fighting, trick flying, kite ballet, indoor kite-flying, teddy bear drops and coordinated kite ascensions where hundreds of kites ascend into the sky at the same time.
And if you're so inclined, you can even find out how to make a kite. The event is hosted by the Long Beach World Kite Museum, the only US museum devoted entirely to kites. RM
