Fireflies

Fireflies are one of the greatest simple delights found in tropical areas. These small 'lighting bugs' give off light by use of bioluminescence to attract mates, with a wavelength from 510 to 670 nanometers. This light is due to a chemical reaction in special light-emitting organs in the lower abdomen of the beetle. In ancient China, fireflies were captured in transparent containers and used as lanterns. We like to catch them at dusk in a mayonnaise jar and set them free in the bedroom before a good night's sleep. TP
