Postcards From Chic Nomads: One Day in Gaitlinburg
Being chic doesn’t always involve shopping at designer stores, lunching at the best restaurants, or grabbing drinks at the hottest lounge. In the Smoky Mountains and in my life, it means getting outside and exploring nature.
Unique Places to Sleep
It's been a while since we checked in with Wimdu, the vacation rentals website that links up travelers with property owners for a totally personalized experience abroad. Since the last time we wrote about their interesting assortment of rentals, they've added several new properties that are sure to appeal to travelers /div> searching for an off-beat place to rest their head every evening. Here's a few of our current favorites:
Beach Party Paris
During the normal year, the Georges Pompidou Expressway in Paris is /div> packed with cars and motorcyclists zipping from one side of the city to another. But for the past ten years during the month of August, the road is transformed from a busy expressway into a pedestrian-only beachside retreat–complete with sand, palm trees, loungers, umbrellas, ice cream vendors, pop up cafes, misting showers, floating pools, volleyball courts, and free concerts.
Dogs Love Vacation, Too!
Hey, where are you going with those suitcases? Are you going on vacation…without me? I hate being stuck at home while you're traveling the world! It's the worst thing ever: my best friend is out having fun without me and I'm left behind with strangers. It's no fair; dogs love vacation as much as humans do. I know what you're thinking: dogs aren't welcome in hotels and vacation rentals but that's not true! There's lots of places we can go together. In fact I've made a list to prove it.
Renting Around the World
Vacation rental websites were big news in 2011 and, as a result, the web has become glutted with similar sites offering by-owner rentals. Very few websites actually curate their selection like, for example, the modern vacation rentals collection at Boutique-Homes.com Finding the perfect lodging for your vacation is stressful enough without having to scroll through thousands of listings for bland apartments in boring neighborhoods. That's why we like Wimdu.

Backyard Magic: Camp in My Garden
As a child, did you ever go "camping" in the backyard? It's not quite the same as pitching a tent in the backwoods of Yosemite, but for kids equipped only with flashlights and sleeping bags, even the most familiar backyard can resemble the deepest darkest jungle. Camp in My Garden, a UK-based website, is bringing back some of that backyard magic by getting ordinary homeowners to offer up their back gardens as campgrounds for anyone in need.
The Iconic Beach House (Updated)
Updated 12/27/11: The New York Times reports that Andrew Geller, the architect of many of the seaside structures we spotlighted in our original article, passed away at the age of 87 on Christmas day. Geller's work is distinguished by a very American sense of optimism and a whimsical conception of space, especially when it comes to his iconic beach house designs.

Circus, Circus, Circus
It's not often you see a man with his head inside a lion's mouth. The circus must have come to town. Actually, it's on it way. The 8th International Circus Festival of Budapest kicks off on January 21st for five days, and features 30 acts from 17 different countries. Including this kind of thing.
