Sometimes when you travel, you can find the most mundane things from back home in totally different settings. It shows you how unpredictable something 'normal' can be in another world. Take this floating school in Halong Bay, Vietnam. It's part of a community of floating homes and markets, a place where there really isn't much hard surface area – but lots of water.

It was built by the local British Embassy for Vietnamese children, and there's another like it in the Chong Khneas floating village in Cambodia. It makes you realize that schools don't have to be the square, windowless, concrete blocks they are in much of the world. Here's another example in Ziyun county in Guizhou, southwest China. It's called the Dongzhong ('in cave') school.

Located in one of the Miao villages, it's quite literally a school in a cave. The school was set up inside this huge vault of a cavern, which was carved into a mountain by natural forces like wind, water and seismic movement. It's probably great for geography classes.
