Les Bains des Docks

We love these photographs of Jean Nouvel's new aquatic center in Le Havre, northern France. Built in July as part of masterplan to regenerate the city's docklands area, Les Bains des Docks is a striking complex made up of white cubes and splashes of color.

Not only does the center look amazing, but it's also impressive in scale. It's 5,000 square meters in size, with 12 pools (inside and out), a sauna, hammam, spa and fitness room.

The main areas are: a heated outside pool, an inside/outside play pool, and a balneotherapy center. 'Suspended beaches' and 'suspended pools' are interlinked around the space.

The interior is mostly white tiles and blue water, but the children's foam play area is an explosion of primary colors that bursts out of one wall.

'It is a paradox,' says Nouvel, 'a building on a harbor scale, inspiring simplicity and robustness, but which betrays its complexity as soon as one penetrates its volumes. One enters a universe of whiteness and depths.'

A triumph of minimalism. RM
