Caution… Airplane Crossing Ahead

It's not something you'd expect to see every day. But when space is at a premium, you have to make do. Perhaps nowhere more than in Gibraltar, the small British rock perched at the end of Spain, where traffic stops for airplanes.

There can't be many airports in the world where streets cross runways, but Gibraltar Airport is pretty unique. At only 500 metres from Gibraltar's city centre, it's the closest airport to any city in the world.

The street that links the rock with Spain isn't entirely convenient. With on average seven flights a day, the street closes for around two hours while planes taxi or land.

That's why, with recent rennovations to the airport, the street is being taken out of use, and replaced with a tunnel route.

The street will be kept, though, for emergency use. It's almost a shame to see it closed. Check out this video. RM
