Your Birthday in Taylor, Mississippi
Poet and Been-Seen.com contributer Terri Phillips recently took a road trip through the Southern United States and sent us an evocative collection of words and images illustrating her experience in the small town of Taylor, Mississippi. Enjoy!
Traveling Out of Sight
Some people think this is a pretty big world, Others think it is pretty small. It depends on who you talk to and when. Big or small, there is a lot of world to see and a lot of ways to see it.
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a…!
I always thought the coolest superheroes were the ones who could fly. Sure it would be great to have super strength, a great sidekick, “spider senses”, and great gadgets like magic lassos and power rings. But to take flight? To be grounded and then not? Amazing. And the lure of solo flight is not just appealing to those fighting the forces of evil. There are plenty of practical implications of solo flight as well. Imagine being on one side of town, when all of sudden you realized you left your wallet at home. You simply fetch your jetpack, press a few buttons and off you go, arriving in a mere fraction of the time it would take if you had traveled by car.
House of Bottles
We've heard of temples made out of bottles, and houses decorated with them, but here's a utilitarian use for your recyclables. In Warnes, 30km from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, former lawyer Ingrid Vaca Díez is helping poor families build affordable housing using the stuff we normally throw away.
When I Grow Old…
When I grow up, I want to be an old woman. And wear purple, lots of it. And a tutu. And start a llama farm, and sing songs as I waltz down the street. And trek the Himalayas, go hot air ballooning, and jump out of an airplane on my 85th birthday. Luckily, by the time I get there, the world might be ready. Apparently, there’s been a huge increase in experiental traveling for the elderly.
Travel Through Life – in Reverse
Getting carried away
In case you haven't noticed, we live in a very strange world. And if you happen to be in Sonkajärvi, Finland, on the 4th of July, you'll know it for sure. Brace yourself for the World Wife Carrying Championships.
Who wants to live forever?
Dan Buettner is something of an expert on longevity. He studies Blue Zones, places in the world where people live a very long time. One such place is the Greek island of Ikaria, named for the legendary figure Icarus who crafted himself wings of wax and feathers, but flew too close to the sun. The island has fared much better than he did. In fact, says Buettner, much, much better. Ikaria boasts legendary parties, sexually-active nonagenerians, and siblings who all live into their 90s.
