Cottage in a Day
I love the idea of ordering a house and having it delivered. And Cottage in a Day is pretty much what its name suggests. A factory-built, energy-efficient, green home that can be delivered and erected in one day.
CiaD is made by craftsmen, rather than on an assembly line, so it has a very personal feel. There are various different designs, ranging in cost from $52,000-$156,500, with various add-ons (from lofts to laminate tops) available. It uses natural wood liberally, and also meets or exceeds Energy Star requirements, the National Home Builder’s Association green standards, and residential LEED standards.
Just as it can be erected in a day, Cottage in a Day can be moved to another location, as long as foundation piers are set. As it is able to withstand extremes of weather and environment, it can be set up almost anywhere on the planet.
For now, licensing for CiaDs covers Michigan, the state in which they are made, but it is possible for out-of-staters to get hold of one. Here’s the crunch, though… the cottage may be erected in a day, but you still have to get all the permits from your local authorities. And we all know how long that can take. RM
