How many people are in space right now?

Remember the TV series Space: 1999? Or 2001: A Space Odyssey? Ten years ago, we should all have been flying among the stars. And, no doubt to the surprise of many who watched the moon landings 40 years ago, we're not. Well, not many of us are, that is. If you're curious to know exactly how many people are in space right now, google that very phrase or click on the link.

And you'll find a brilliantly simple website that gives you the exact number. Right now (while I'm writing this), there are nine, all on the International Space Station. And they include Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte. Lucky guy. Lucky all of them. Very cool.

But nine. Out of nearly seven billion people. Nine. And a few unmanned probes. Kind of startling, isn't it? In Hollywood, a bunch of chimps, some puppies, and even the Muppets have made it to space… So what's taking the rest of us so long? RM
