It looks like a cross between K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider and one of James Bond’s slick gadgets. But Earthrace is the real deal. The 78-foot Trimaran has been piercing its way through the world’s waves on a quest to break the record of 75 days for circumnavigating Earth in a power boat. But Earthrace isn’t just any powerboat, it’s a 100% biodiesel fueled power boat.
Although Earthrace failed — the attempt was abandoned about 2/3 of the way there in late May due to hull damage — it has succeeded in its other objective, to increase global awareness of renewable fuels. And, it may even try and break that record again. The Earthrace crew is considering another shot in 2008.
