It's amazing what you can do with a cell phone. Taking pictures and sending email? Old hat these days in Japan. How about paying for tickets on the subway using your phone instead of cash or a credit card? Apparently you can do the same in restaurants too. Want to open your garage with your phone instead of a remote control? No problem. Amazingly there's even a phone that tells you when you can have a baby.

Yes, believe it or not, the Mitsubishi D702iF for Japanese network NTT DoCoMo, features a menstrual cycle monitor that keeps track of your biological rhythms and lets you know when it's peak conception time. You, as in girls, that is… Apparently it was invented in response to Japan's shrinking population. Unfortunately, however, it's not all that scientific. It goes by calendar month rather than by fluctuating body temperatures, but what the heck, it's a cool gimmick… We only hope it doesn't go off loudly in public places.

As if that weren't reason enough to fly to Japan and buy one, this phone also locks automatically when its owner gets too far away. It has a camouflage melody, a fake phone call you can set off by pressing a secret button – handy for getting out of those awkward conversations with unwanted suitors. Oh, and in case you thought this was a space-age gizmo for emancipated ladies, it also has a recipe database. How 1950s…
