Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea
If you're on the Hudson River this weekend, don't miss the chance to see a curious flotilla of eccentric vessels making their way towards Queens. The Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea are the creation of maverick NYC installation artist Swoon.
The handcrafted boats have been afloat on the river since August 15 and are destined to arrive at their home port, an invented landscape at Long Island City, on Sunday. There they'll form part of a short exhibition at Deitch Studios.
The vessels are 'a hybrid between boats and bits of land mass broken off and headed out to sea', and along their way have been doubling as stages for performances.
The Swimming Cities were brought into being by Swoon and Deitch Projects, with the help of collaborators like playwright Lisa D'Amour, the band Dark Dark Dark and circus composer Sxip Shirey, as well as many others. Weird and wonderful they certainly are – but well worth checking out if you get the chance.
