Shark Attack!

Shark Attack!...........................(blu2.jpg)

If you’ve enjoyed Been-Seen’s posts on street artists Banksy and JR, check out this amazing mural in the Barrio Carmelo district of Barcelona. It’s the work of Italian graffiti artist and stop-motion animator Blu.

Shark Attack!...........................(blu1.jpg)

Blu has created an array of amazing two-dimensional works of art in cities around the world. While he paints them, he videos the process, and records the remarks of passersby. Then he plays the results back at high speed, with a selection of comments over the top.

Check out the video for the Barcelona shark. At first, people assume someone is whitewashing over 20-year-old Communist slogans (a good thing). Then the creature starts to take shape, blending with the graffiti under it, and they ask whether it’s a whale or a snake, a sardine or a lizard-whale possibly? ‘What is it for?’ ask the adults cynically. ‘I’ll do the same when I’m older,’ say the kids enthusiastically. And finally, ‘It’s a shark that’s eating up the communists in the Carmelo.’

Brilliant. RM
