Everyone’s a photographer these days. At least it feels that way sometimes. At a recent festival, I watched as SLRs, point-and-shoots, cells and iPhones competed for the best views and angles. We document everything, good, bad and ugly. Here’s some of the best, via the National Geographic International Photography Contest 2009.

Pictured top is a shot taken by Gail von Bergen Ryan, in the subway between Pudong and the Bund in Shanghai. Above is a boy called Andrew and his friend, a young sperm whale named Scar, swimming together off the west coast of Dominica and captured by Peter Allinson.

This amazing shot was taken by Cesare Naldi in the Andaman Islands. It features Nazroo, an elephant driver, taking his elephant for a swim. As you do.
